Nature and Man's Folly

Whoever thought it was a good idea to design a city in a bowl that sits seven feet below sea level on a river delta between the Gulf of Mexico and a large lake deserves to be named the all time French idiot. If we are even thinking of rebuilding what now remains of New Orleans, we are just as stupid as the original settlers of that area. Obviously, as we have seen, it was not the best place to put a city. Even if Katrina had not come along, New Orleans has been sinking more and more every year, and it was only an amount of time before it would have been turned into a fishtank display. I feel bad for those who lost their lives as a result of living in the death trap of a city. It is a shame that people did not heed the warning to depart before the storm arrived. I know that many of the people left there were unable to leave because they had no way of getting out, but for those people who just decided to stay in there homes to ride the storm out...I don't have quite as much simpathy for them. I guess it is a good display of man thinking they are larger than anything nature can throw at them. It is a shame to see how the people left in New Orleans are handling the situation. There have been reports of armed gangs taking over hotels, and people shooting each other, raping each other, and beating each other. I do hope that aid gets to these people, and that we can bring them out of that place, but the non-stop complaining and showing no sign of wanting to give their own helping hand to the people there trying to help them; yeah that annoys me. The amount of people there now trying to help with the rescue efforts are being so hindered by the very people that they are rescuing. Helicopter evacuations had to be called off over certain parts of the city due to people firing weapons at the helicopters! A national guardsman was shot while standing outside of the super dome. How are we supposed to help these people when they are shooting at the very people trying to save them? Now instead of fully concentrating on the rescue effort itself, they are having to send thousands of troops into the city heavily armed with instructions to shoot to kill. While there are still some people genuinly trapped and have no hope to be rescued unless these men can get to them, the rescuers are having to police the streets. I can not believe the display some people have shown in New Orleans, and it really makes me sick. I hope that the rescuers are able to get to the people who really need rescuing, and I say leave the ones who are causing trouble there to fend for themselves.
